Call for Proposals - Research Symposium

The Environmental Education Association of South Carolina is seeking individuals or groups/organizations to share research posters and oral presentations at the Southeastern Environmental Education Alliance’s Annual Conference in Columbia, SC on Thursday, September 24, 2020.

Proposal Submission Deadline EXTENDED: April 15, 2020 due to Covid-19 disruption.

Research Symposium Theme: Environmental Legacy: It’s Our Story. Past, Present, and Future.

Research Symposium Strands:

  • Pages of the Past: This research symposium strand aims to highlight research projects that capture information about our environmental past by featuring sessions highlighting the fields of geosciences, natural history, or socio-cultural perspectives. Proposals submitted for this strand should include research efforts that align with one or more of the following guiding questions: What does the natural landscape tell us about our environmental past? How do historical environmental science data inform our present-day lives and/or future directions? How have cultural connections to the environment changed over time?
  • Present-Day Plotlines: This research symposium strand explores our present-day environmental heritage by featuring research efforts that highlight current geosciences research, science education research, evaluation and assessment efforts, and social science research. Proposals submitted for this strand should consider one or more of the following guiding questions: Are you researching exploring a new environmental educational program or project? Are you involved with environmental education research that is investigating current trends? Are you involved in assessment or evaluation efforts?
  • Foreshadowing the Future: This research symposium strand explores the chapters of our environmental legacy yet to be written and encourages proposal submissions from all applicable fields. Proposals submitted for this strand are encouraged to consider research that align with one or more of the following guiding questions:  What does environmental education look like in the future? What are some sustainable, innovative, and forward-thinking projects, ideas, and strategies that are on the horizon and how might these impact society? What does our environment look like in the future?

Research Symposium Session Types: In your proposal, you will be asked to indicate your preferred session type. If accepted, the conference committee will accommodate your request to the extent possible.

      Poster – Posters should be printed to a dimension of 4’ x 6’. Scaled down versions of the poster are recommended to be printed as handouts to a dimension of 8.5” x 11”.

      Science Café Table Topic – This format will be done in 20-minute session in a roundtable discussion in small groups of no more than 10 people. No PowerPoint presentation is required; however, props, demonstrations, specimens, etc. are strongly encouraged. This format is designed to be an informal discussion between expert and educator.

      Oral Presentation – Presentations will be 15 minutes in length with an additional 5 minutes for audience questions. A laptop, LCD projector, and speakers (upon request) will be provided.

Proposal Review and Acceptance: Research Symposium session proposals will be reviewed by committee and speakers will be notified whether their proposals are accepted for presentation by April 15, 2020.

Symposium Registration Fees: Symposium presenters may register at the Early Bird rate of $180 before August 24, 2020 or the regular conference rate of $200 after August 24, 2020. Students and SEEA Leadership Team members may register at the discounted rate of $150. Presenters who attend for their session ONLY do not need to register for the Conference.
