To Be a Green Step School

1. Form a staff "Green Team." 
2. Consider attending an annual Train & Update Session (check our calendar for dates or host one in your region).

3. Decide on one or more sustainability projects where students learn, do, and teach others that could serve as a model to other schools in your county:

Green Steps Projects should be:
 Students have documented learning, doing and teaching others about an environmental topic
Model Quality: The project(s) is worthy to show other schools 
Well EstablishedThe project(s) has been model quality for at least 12 months
Sustainable: At least 2 paid staff/faculty members are helping manage
the project(s)
Documented: Videos or pictures showing students learning, doing, and teaching, with detailed captions, have been sent to mentor(s) and by April 1                                                                                         ("Learn" pictures/videos should show the teacher/mentor educating the students, "Do" pictures/videos should show the

students using the knowledge they learned, and "Teach" pictures/videos should show students teaching other people what they learned through the project.)

  • Energy 
  • Reduce 
  • Reuse 
  • Recycle 
  • Green Purchasing 

Protect Projects

  • Air
  • Water
  • Prevent Litter

Restore Projects

  • Soil
  • Habitat

4. Request mentor(s) for each project or suggest someone you know.
Invite your approved mentor(s) to meet with your team in the fall.                                                                                     

6. Be sure your mentor(s) submit midyear summary forms for your projects.

7Invite your mentor(s) to meet with your team again no later than April 25 to critique your project(s).
Remind your mentor(s) to fill out and submit Green Steps Evaluation Forms by May 1. Due date is 
Accept your award at a state workshop/conference or a regional fall kickoff (check calendar for dates and details).           

NOTE: Forever Frames are given after earning two project awards. 

Green Steps Timeline


  • Meet with your mentor(s)

Fall through Spring 

  • Conduct project(s)
  • Document and submit videos or pictures with detailed captions to your mentor(s) and


  • Prior to April 25, meet with mentor(s) for project(s) critique
  • Register for state workshop/conference (check calendar for dates and details)
  • By May 1, have your mentor(s) submit Green Steps Evaluation Forms
